The first formal exhibition of Gregor Laird's work since his graduation five years previously, 'Lost in the Forest' ran from 1st to 29th October 2006 at the Brunswick Hotel, Glasgow. Part of that year's Glasgay festival, it was a commercial and critical hit. Read some of the articles written about it in the Press & Media Coverage section.
In Gregor's own words:
'I am at my most confident when working across different forms of media - 'Lost in the Forest' takes in photography, Graphic Design, painting and found objects. Collage is involved in everything I do, whether that be cutting up fabric and re-stitching it or projecting my artwork whilst DJing. The possibilities are infinite and I enjoy the contradictions that different images create.
The collected pictures that make up 'Lost in the Forest' use the suggestive power of the forest as both enchanting and naive, but also a potentially dangerous and dark place. I have drawn on my childhood years living in the country surrounded by miles of woods. These places always carry legends of local folklore and most of the Brothers Grimm stories (who were my favourite authors as a child) took place within "enchanted forests" full of wild beasts and evil witches. Reading these stories back, they carry psychological and on occasion, sexual connotations.'
